Healthy Students are Healthy Learners!

At Longfellow school I am working with students, teachers, staff and families for student health and wellness. My name is Linda Stenstrom-Smith and I am a licensed school nurse, registered nurse, public health nurse, and have my M.A. from the Humphrey Institute at University of Minnesota in health policy and management. I am at Longfellow everyday and in classrooms for health mini lessons twice a month with each grade.

In St Paul Public Schools all school health offices and school nurses are working to help students with asthma, diabetes, ADHD, seizures, allergic disorders, and other health conditions as well as all students who have an injury or illness during the school day. Please let me know if your child has a health condition that needs attention during the school day so that we can plan ahead for your child to be successful in the classroom.

Do you have questions about your child's vision, hearing, immunizations, sports physicals, early childhood screenings, special education services, 504 plans, or other health services? Please let me know.   If you do not have health insurance I have information about community providers and services, vision vouchers, options for obtaining prescription medication, and services in Ramsey County. Please feel free to call me or let me know how I can help your child.

When should a child stay home from school? Any fever over 100.5 degrees, vomiting within the past 24 hours, several episodes of diarrhea within the past 24 hours, undiagnosed whole body rashes, or with untreated live lice. If you are uncertain if your child should attend school please call me.

If your child has been ill with a communicable disease such as strep throat, chicken pox, scabies, ringworm, or unusual rashes please let me know so that notes go out to classmates for their families to be aware of symptoms. Children with strep throat or bacterial pink eye should be taking prescription antibiotics for 24 hours before they return to the classroom.

Let me know how I can help your child be successful at Longfellow! My office phone number is 293-8725 x1006,  feel free to leave a voicemail.
