An outline of learning principles and processes:

Direct instruction and flexible skills-based grouping is used with the district's 6th grade Everyday Math curriculum.

Humanities involves exploratory learning of Ancient Egypt and China, for example, and report writing is contextualized with these units. Provided by community volunteers, such as The Chinese Heritage Foundation, students experience compatible hands-on enrichment activities.

Writers' Workshop also includes persuasive, narrative and poetry writing. Students  learn the required state and national writing elements. All students' writings are celebrated during whole-class presentations.

Balanced Literacy includes Readers' Workshop with flexible guided reading, vocabulary building, read alouds, book buddy clubs, literature circles and readers' theater.

Students follow weekly current events in "Time for Kids" and Student CNN News.

Field trip events include: Minneapolis Art Institute and Overnight Explorers to the Minnesota Zoo.

Enrichment: Community volunteers bring artifacts, teach dances and provide hands-on cultural arts from worldwide cultures.

Come and join us and you'll experience how fun learning can be.

Welcome to 6th Grade!
