Reading Recovery
Reading Recovery is a focused one-on-one program to help low-achieving
first graders develop effective strategies for reading and writing.
This effective intervention is available to all students who need it and is used as a
supplement to good classroom teaching. Children participating in the program receive an intense thirty-minute
individually-designed lesson with a specially trained Reading Recovery teacher in addition to the regular classroom
experience. As soon as students
can read within the average range of their class and demonstrate that
they can continue to achieve, their lessons are discontinued, and new
students begin individual instruction
Saint Paul Reads Research shows that reading improves a student’s comprehension, grammar
and vocabulary skills. This in turn improves a student’s capacity to
learn in all areas. Based on this research, and on the recommendation of the International
Reading Association and the National Council of Teachers of English,
Superintendent Harvey annually challenges all Saint Paul students,
staff and citizens to read at least 25 books.
