Fifth grade at Longfellow Humanities Magnet School is unique for many reasons.
We work to train the students in organizational skills, such as keeping track of and prioritizing their work by using daily planners. Parents, please check your child's planner daily and feel free to leave notes for the teacher at any time.
We start our Humanities study with a unit on the
Vikings, followed by units on Russia and China. Students learn study skills: note taking, research reports, and multimedia projects.
We use technology to support these skills by using Internet resources and creating multimedia projects. Fifth grade also promotes thinking skills with chess games and lessons for all students.
We focus on basic math skills, and we use Everyday Math, a contextually based math program. Field trips to Belwin Nature Center, the Planetarium, the Sewell Ballet and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and two downhill ski trips promote academic and social skills, as well as lifelong healthy choices.
Our main goal is to challenge our students to their fullest potential and help them to take more personal responsibility for their education. We strive to promote an environment where all students can achieve maximum success.
Welcome to 5th grade! Ms. Filipek Johnson
