Fifth Grade

Fifth grade at Longfellow Humanities Magnet School is a year of growth. A child's independence grows as abilities and interests expand- both socially and academically. It is an exciting year.

  • Humanities is units of studies from the Civil War Reconstruction  through the 20th Century in America. We will explore our place in time and history.
  • Special Humanities units on Maya, Inca and Aztec Cultures and preparation for competition in the Annual History Day Projects.
  • Writer's and Readers' Workshops with Flex grouping, literature circles and skills lessons to meet each student's needs.
  • Vocabulary and Spelling are also a part of our learning.
  • We use technology to support these skills by using Internet resources and creating multimedia projects.
  • Everday Math is used both for whole group and Flex group lesson.
  • FASTT Math is also incorporated.
  • Field trips to Valley Branch Nature Center, the Planetarium and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts.
  • Current Events discussions with weekly Time For Kids and daily CNN news for Kids.

Our main goal is to challenge our students to their fullest potential and
help them to take more personal responsibility for their education. We
strive to promote an environment where all students can achieve maximum
success.

Welcome to 5th grade!
